MSc WE-TEAM

Faculty members of the ECTLab and undergraduate/postgraduate students working on their diploma theses were actively involved (in close collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), the National Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), and the Electronics group of the ATLAS experiment (ATLAS-NSW-elx)), in the development, integration, and commissioning of the electronics for the New Small Wheels, NSWs, that recently have been installed at the ATLAS experiment. A fully automated test station to validate the performance of the new electronics boards (Data Driver Card, L1DDC) that reside on the detectors and handle the bidirectional electrical and optical data transmission between the front-end boards and the off-detector network interface has been developed. In total, 1024 L1DDC were tested at four identical test stations (implemented at ECTLab, National Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), National Centre of Scientific Research (NCSR) Demokritos, and CERN).

ECTLab is also participating in the second most decisive upgrade of the ATLAS experiment (ATLAS Phase-II Upgrade project). Its responsibility is to thoroughly assess all functionalities of the new 1572 electronic boards that handle all the 380,000 readout channels of the Muon Spectrometer Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) detectors that are used mainly to trigger muon particles produced by proton collisions. The detection of muons (particles about 200 times heavier than electrons) is expected to be at the forefront of potential discoveries when the new HL-LHC accelerator starts operating in 2028.
